SHAWN IS A YEAR OLD!
Shawn is a year old, and while he doesn't look any different, it was his family and friends that were at his party that made the difference. He probably didn't understand who all those people were that brought all those brightly colored bags and boxes, and he probably didn't understand why there was one whole cake on the tray of his highchair instead of just a tiny piece. And everyone that was
singing to him, as he looked around in wonder, he still didn't know that everyone there was there just for him. They all came to see him and wish him a happy birthday. He made it through a whole year of life, and that in itself is something very special. His party was at Aunt Sue's and Uncle Terry's house, and we all thank them again for being such great hosts in allowing all those people to invade their house for a
couple hours. The food was great, tuna sandwiches shaped like gingerbread men, chicken salad sandwiches shaped like hearts and PB&J sandwiches shaped like stars. All sorts of salads, chips and dips, guacamole and salsa, potato salad, and deviled eggs for Shawn's great grandpa who loves them. Candice was there, the daughter I never had, who said her main job while
she was here for three days was to take care of the baby and take photographs at the party and at the park. Her presence there meant the world to Jack and myself - we hadn't seen her since last July before she started her new adventure in Kansas City. Mark and Glenn came, friends of Laurie's from school, and thank you Glenn for conversing with the elders in the room, Great
Grandpa Jim and Lori loved talking with you, you were so kind to everyone. Laurie's friend, Linda, drove all the way in from Bakersfield on her day off and spent a little time with everyone. Shawn's friend and Baby Shawn's godmother, Tara, came to give Shawn two new pairs of DC shoes, among other things, we were so happy she could come. Lori Mahr, a friend of Laurie's, came to see her #1
favorite baby, and she couldn't believe how big he had gotten (Laurie started taking Shawn to see her every two weeks from the day he was born). As for family, they were all there to share in Shawn's big day: Great Nana, Great Aunt Angie and Uncle Alex, Great Aunt Sue and Uncle Terry, my nephew Brian, his wife Jenny, and their two children, Aisling and Xander (Xander will be a year old in May!). And from the other side of the family, Great Grandma Peggy and Grandpa Jim, and Grandma
Marty came to spend some time with the smallest sprout on their family tree. The theme of the party was Shawn's favorite Disney Channel show, The Little Einsteins. They appeared on his cake and popped up in different places around the room. Shawn got his own little cake and tasted the frosting with the tips of his fingers, but then Dad put Shawn's hands in the cake, and Shawn didn't know which hand to lick first! Shawn received many wonderful presents, a lot of clothes, some toys, much needed diapers and wipes from Grandma Marty (we always need those!), along with money and gift cards. Thanks to everyone for celebrating with us and for the wonderful gifts.
