JANUARY BIRTHDAY BASH
Saturday was our January Birthday Bash - we celebrated sister Sue's birthday, nephew Allen's birthday, sister Andrea's birthday, and my birthday (coming up on the 27th). Andrea made arrangements for us to have the private room at Luminarias in Monterey Park - they have a Saturday brunch now and it was just wonderful. Shawn enjoyed homemade bean and cheese burritos, guacamole and chips, cantaloupe. I was interested in hitting the pasta bar and had the chef mix some scallops with some vegetables, and then combine the two sauces (alfredo and
marinara) together to make a pink sauce, try it sometime, it's great! Some people don't like to work for their meal, but I can never pass up the peel-your-own shrimp with cocktail sauce, yum! They also have the best sausages, or "bangers" as my brother-in-law would say (he's from England). To our surprise too, for dessert, Jenny, my nephew's wife (an aspiring pastry chef), treated us all to two of her cakes! She made a purse for the girls, and for Allen, his very own video game controller cake (he took that home for himself to enjoy). The purse cake was a lemon cake and was very good! Jenny is practicing hard for her wedding cake debut at
Chris and Jackie's wedding this coming October - we can't wait to see that! Nephew Allen is great with the kids and started up his own reading corner, so it seemed. He took out one book, and all three kids were drawn to it, and so they all sat there fascinated with what Allen had to show them, it was pretty cute. We all opened up our gifts, and they were grately appreciated. Shawn and Aisling were fascinated with the purple/silver foil that came in one of the birthday bags. At one point, Aisling had two of them and was using them like cheerleader pom poms, too cute. Maybe she's a future cheerleader in training! Xander and Shaw
n were following each other around and played well together. They're only six weeks apart, so they get along well with each other. LATER THAT DAY, after the brunch, Jack, Sue, Terry and myself went to the annual Long Beach State Alumni Band Basketball Game at The Pyramid down at Long Beach State (CSULB). My biggest regret was not going to CSULB and being a part of The Big Brown Music Machine, which is what it was called at that time (70's). They were the best band in the country back then, but they have since disbanded the football team, and following that, they
disbanded the marching band, such a shame. So about 60 band members got together and played for the game. As we were standing in line for a ticket, Jack sees someone he knows at the front of the line. It turned out to be Maureen O'Hearn, his next-door neighbor since Jack was in the 4th grade (see picture). Maureen was also in the CSULB band and played clarinet in Jack's section. Jack immediately pulled out his picture of Shawn, his grandson, and Maureen thought he was sooooo cute, well, we know he is too! I really enjoyed listening to the band play, and again, could kick myself for not making a wiserdecision in where I went to college. Oh well, we can't live on regrets can we, it doesn't change anything! Lastly, see video here of the CSULB band played a wonderful arrangement of the "Star Spangled Banner", brought tears to my eyes.......
